Kazan National Research Technological University

Situated in the capital city of the Republic of Tartarstan, Kazan National Research Technological University (KNTU) is Russia’s largest higher education institution for chemistry and technology. 
KNTU dates back to 1890 when it was known as the Integrated Industrial and Technical College. It became Kazan Polytechnic Institute in 1919 and then, in 1930, its Faculty of Chemistry merged with that of Kazan State University, becoming the Kazan Chemical Technological Institute before eventually becoming a university in 1992 and gaining "National Research" status in 2010, putting it among an elite group of 36 Russian universities.
Over 150 courses (bachelor's and master's) are offered by KNRTU to its 26,000 student population across faculties including: chemical engineering and technology; petroleum; chemistry and nanotechnologies; mechanical engineering; chemical and petrochemical industry; polymers; light industry; fashion and design; automated control systems and information technologies; institute of administration; economics and social technologies; food engineering and biotechnology; military education; additional professional education; lifelong education and corporate university.
The university’s research priorities, meanwhile, are: chemistry and technology of polymer and composite materials; chemistry and technology of high energy materials; integrated processing of hydrocarbon resources; nanotechnology, nanomaterials and energy and resource saving technologies for advanced materials.
KNTU is one of eight Russian universities who are members of UNINET, the Eurasia Pacific University Network. Meanwhile, its international partnerships span 136 universities in 37 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa.  The university has double degree programmes with Liaoning Shihua University, China and is developing other programmes with universities in Austria and Spain.
A recipient of the State Prize of Russia and Tartarstand on several occasions. KNTU is ranked 10 out of 159 technical universities by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY ENGINEERING

Research Assistant Professor in Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience (three posts) (Ref. 260803002)

The Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) contributes to PolyU’s world ranking of 21st and 18th for Architecture and Built Environment as well as Civil and Structural Engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. BEEE is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment, and offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Bachelor of Engineering. Currently there are over 35 research staff and 201 research students (187 studying for PhD), over 600 full-time / part-time Master’s students, an undergraduate student body of over 250 full-time students.  BEEE currently has over 50 full-time academic / teaching staff members engaging in a wide range of research activities organised in the following three themes:

Building Energy: Energy issues in buildings addressed in the context of both demand and supply to promote sustainable built environments, urban energy systems and emerging clean energy technologies.

Building Environment: Optimisation of buildings and built environments for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual / spatial and vibration / acoustic aspects to improve occupant health and productivity, and extraterrestrial human habitats.

Building Safety and Resilience: Protection of building occupants from hazards such as fire and lightning to improve safety and resilience of communities, buildings and the built environments.

The Department is seeking internationally excellent candidate with exceptional track record of research and scholarship in the theme of Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience.

Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a) conduct research in related areas and contribute to the development of the Department’s research strength;

(b) initiate, lead and participate in scholarly research in his/her area of expertise and be active in research leading to quality journal publications and in bidding for external research grants and applied research projects;

(c) undertake teaching duties;

(d) supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses;

(e) undertake relevant administrative duties; and

(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a) have a PhD degree in an appropriate related discipline;

(b) preferably have at least two years of relevant postdoctoral research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs) with teaching experience in related disciplines and subjects being a definite advantage;

(c) have strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research;

(d) be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills;

(e) have an excellent command of English;

(f) have an excellent record of research and scholarship commensurate with their experience; and

(g) demonstrate good potential in bidding for research grants as well as in establishing significant externally funded research programmes.

The applicants should demonstrate strong potential to be internationally prominent through a track record of excellent research in the area of Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience. They should contribute to the development and delivery of degree programmes; should demonstrate the ability to teach in engineering design relevant to their technical specialisation; and should have been involved in major research projects.

Applicants should be able to conduct research and teach subjects related to Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience.

Conditions of Service

Job Responsibilities:


	Lead the design, fabrication, and integration of ultrasonic transducer systems for antifouling applications on marine hull structures. Biofouling background is advantageous. 
	Conduct advanced numerical simulations using ANSYS or equivalent FEM tools to model surface acoustic wave propagation and optimize transducer performance. 
	Design and execute experimental protocols, including laboratory and field testing, to evaluate antifouling effectiveness and safe biological interaction with other marine organisms. 
	Analyse complex multi-domain datasets (acoustic, mechanical, biological) and generate technical reports, journal publications, and intellectual property documentation. 
	Coordinate across interdisciplinary teams which include students, in the areas of marine biology, mechanical engineering, and naval architecture, to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met. 
	To liaise and communicate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met.
	Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor.


Job Requirements


	PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustics, Marine Engineering, or related field. Ability to demonstrate additional expertise in ultrasonic systems and wave propagation is an advantage. 
	Proficiency in finite element modeling, particularly in tools like ANSYS. Understanding of piezoelectricity is an advantage. 
	Experience in experimental design and prototyping, especially involving transducers, vibration measurement, or marine equipment. 
	Familiarity with biofouling mechanisms or marine biology is highly desirable. 
	Proven track record of independent research, including high-impact publications.

Job description:

The successful candidate will:


	Conduct original and high-quality research in adsorption-based separation and/or membrane technology.
	Develop novel adsorbents and/or membranes for gas or liquid storage and separation applications.
	Characterize adsorption and transport properties using advanced analytical techniques.
	Prepare high-impact research papers for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences, workshops, and meetings.
	Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and engage in knowledge exchange with industry and academic partners.
	Contribute to the preparation of research proposals for external funding.
	Support the supervision of graduate students and assist in guiding their research projects.
	Assist in the development of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and modules. Facilitate the acquisition of necessary laboratory equipment and interact with international suppliers when required.


Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field with expertise in adsorption and/or membrane-based separation technologies. The following qualifications and skills are expected:


	PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
	Expertise in adsorption or membrane-based separation technologies (e.g., gas separation, water treatment, or CO₂ capture).
	Strong knowledge of adsorption isotherm models, mass transport mechanisms, and surface chemistry.
	Experience in synthesis, functionalization, and characterization of adsorbents or membranes.
	Proficiency in advanced characterization techniques, such as BET, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, ICP, and gas sorption analysis.
	Good understanding of process design for adsorption or membrane-based separation.
	Strong track record of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
	Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English.
	Ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary research team.
	Prior experience in student supervision and research coordination is a plus.
