Founded in 1950 as Hokkaido Women’s Medical College, Sapporo Medical University became Japan’s first medical university established under the post-WWII education system. Today, it is a comprehensive medical university with two schools—the School of Medicine and the School of Health Sciences—serving about 1,300 students and supported by 1,600 faculty and staff.
The university celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2025 and completed a new campus in 2022. To date, the School of Medicine has produced approximately 6,100 graduates and the School of Health Sciences about 2,500, who contribute to healthcare, public health, and education in Japan and worldwide.
Guided by three core principles—educating medical professionals with humanity, contributing to local healthcare, and promoting international activities and advanced research—the university offers innovative education through facilities such as the Clinical Simulation Center and Surgical Training Center. National licensing exam pass rates remain among the highest in Japan.
Research achievements include the world’s first regenerative spinal cord therapy using bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, approved in 2018 and covered by national health insurance in 2019. The university also leads cancer research and vaccine development.
Sapporo Medical University Hospital provides advanced medical care, including robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and supports elite athletes through its Sports Medical Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the university played a key role in critical care and public health in Hokkaido.
Looking ahead, the university aims to strengthen infectious disease response, foster global collaboration, and advance cutting-edge research while maintaining its founding ethos of an enterprising spirit and commitment to community healthcare.
