Chengdu University was officially established in 1978 but its history dates back to 1926 when the National Chengdu University was founded. Today the university is run by the People’s Municipal Government of Chengdu alongside the authorities of Sichuan Province and Chengdu City.

The university is located in Chengdu, a city in the southwest of China. Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province and is also Unesco’s first-ever City of Gastronomy. The city is known for its Sichuanese cuisine.

Students are given the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or an entire academic year as part of the university’s academic exchange programme. The university has developed partnerships with 124 higher education institutions in 35 countries, including 26 world-class universities.

The university is home to the Sichuan Industrial Institute of Antibiotics, a national antibiotic research and development centre. There are also a number of other research centres based at the university including the Cancer Biology and Innovative Drug Research Centre and the Research Centre for Energy Engineering Materials.
