Turkish university鈥檚 鈥榗larity of vision鈥 in transformation into innovation hub secures top prize

A university鈥檚 transformation into an聽innovation hub for a聽region of聽Turkey traditionally defined by聽agriculture and tourism has been recognised with the top prize in聽the latest round of聽the Times Higher Education 础飞补谤诲蝉听础蝉颈补.

Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of聽Malaysia, presented the award for Leadership and Management Team of聽the Year to聽representatives from the Izmir Institute of Technology in a聽ceremony held in聽Kuala Lumpur on 29聽April.

The judges praised the 鈥渃larity of vision鈥 from the public research university鈥檚 leaders, following their work to highlight the untapped potential of Izmir as an innovation and research hub, including securing more government support.

鈥淭he strategy was based on an understanding of the potential not just of the institution, but also of the region in which it is based,鈥 the judges said.

鈥淭hat ambition, and the leadership shown by Iztech in mobilising resources and partners ranging from government to industry, was enormously impressive.鈥

Teams from the National University of Singapore (NUS) took home two of the 10 awards at the 罢贬贰听Awards Asia, for International Strategy of the Year and Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year.

Judges recognised the 鈥渢ransformational strategy for international recruitment鈥 of NUS鈥 business school in the face of challenges including pandemic-induced travel restrictions and competition from prestigious Chinese institutions.

Eighty finalists were in the running for the sixth edition of these awards, which celebrate innovation across Asia鈥檚 higher education institutions, with 17 countries and territories represented.

Representatives from Thailand鈥檚 Hatyai and Chulalongkorn universities also took home an award each, while other winners were from institutions across Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Phil Baty, 色盒直播鈥檚 chief global affairs officer, noted the 鈥渨ealth鈥 of innovation across the region, with 600 institutions entering this year鈥檚 awards. 鈥淲e received such a flood of excellent entries that I have to emphasise that these 10 winners 鈥 chosen through a rigorous and robust judging process 鈥 are but the primus inter pares, the first among a host of quality submissions that our experts singled out,鈥 he said.

The awards ceremony coincided with 色盒直播鈥檚 Asia Universities Summit, being held in Kuala Lumpur in partnership with Sunway University.
