The Opportunity

About the Role

Join a nationally significant NHMRC-funded research program focused on advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kidney health outcomes. As a Research Associate, you will contribute to impactful research that supports communities to design and implement evidence-based health interventions aimed at reducing the burden of chronic kidney disease. Working within Flinders University's Rural and Remote Health team in Darwin, you will collaborate with researchers, communities, and industry partners across regional, remote and national settings to deliver meaningful health outcomes.


	Contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of research activities, including literature reviews, data collection, analysis and dissemination of findings.
	Support the successful delivery of project milestones and KPIs, including ethics and governance approvals, in collaboration with the broader research team.
	Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, industry partners and stakeholders across regional, rural and remote locations.
	Produce high-quality research outputs, including publications, presentations and contributions to future research funding opportunities.


This position makes a significant contribution to the University’s strategic plan to change 10 million lives, Every One Matters, by 2035 through directly contributing to the strategic driver of Research that Matters. By advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kidney health through impactful, community-informed research, the role supports the generation of evidence, partnerships and knowledge that drive meaningful health improvements across regional, rural and remote communities.

About You

You are an emerging researcher with a passion for improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes through impactful, community-centred research. With a background in public health, Indigenous health or a related discipline, you bring strong research skills, experience working across diverse stakeholder groups, and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes that contribute to meaningful change in regional, rural and remote communities.

You will bring:


	Progress towards, or completion of, a PhD in public health, Indigenous health, or a related health discipline, with demonstrated research experience.
	Knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research methodologies and culturally responsive approaches to research.
	Strong project management skills, with the ability to achieve milestones, critically review literature, and contribute to publications and presentations.
	Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with communities, industry partners, and multidisciplinary research teams across regional, rural and remote settings.


Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT

At Flinders Rural and Remote Health NT, our aim is to be a hub for innovative health research, education, and workforce development across the Northern Territory. We engage with students, community, and stakeholders to provide critical programs, such as the Northern Territory Medical Program, Paramedicine, Rural Clinical School, and the University Department of Rural Health.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading medical program and help shape the future of medical education in Australia and comes at a time where ANU has made a major investment in the medical program and School of Medicine and Psychology. ANU has a high-quality medical program which is currently undergoing a substantial revision expanding clinical placements, enhancing Indigenous Health through the program and with plans to implement a world first longitudinal evidenced based student development program.

The Position

The Head of Medical Program will be responsible for the development, delivery and continuous improvement and update of the MChD / Medical program. This will include evaluation within the University's education framework and policies and satisfying the accreditation requirements of the Australian Medical Council. 

The Person

The Head of Medical Program will have an excellent working relationship with the local health sector, and particularly with the SMP Clinical Schools, to support the curriculum taught in clinical settings. They will be expected to work collegially, leading by example to develop and maintain effective, productive and beneficial workplace relationships with all academic, clinical and professional Hospital, School and College staff, students and honorary appointees, as well as with industry stakeholders. A medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) and extensive experience working successfully with medical and/or health professionals to effectively deliver medical education programs with previous senior leadership experience in a Medical School, Clinical School or similar health or university environment, is required.

The School

The School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) was established in 2023 to bring together expertise from Medicine and Psychology to develop a unique educational and research environment. The focus is to produce psychologists, researchers, and medical graduates who practice compassion, conscience and professional excellence, and with a knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and culture. The school partners with a number of healthcare organisations to deliver teaching and training including but not limited to ACT Health, community practices throughout the ACT and Southeastern NSW.

The College

The ANU College of Science and Medicine encompasses the disciplines of: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environment and Society, Mathematics, Physics, and Science Communication and is also home to a number of cross-disciplinary and specialist Institutes and Centres.
