Discussion forums are an art and a science.鈥
Too much professor engagement can shut down鈥痶he discussion and too little can leave鈥 students feeling lost and unengaged.鈥
鈥疕i, I鈥檓 Dr Karen Srba, dean of Saint Francis鈥疷niversity鈥檚 Francis Worldwide. Here are some tips鈥痮n creating good discussion forums in your virtual鈥痗lassroom.
First, make sure your discussion or鈥痲uestions relate to the topics and assignments鈥痜or that week.
Remember: discussion forums should鈥痓e used to check for understanding and allow鈥痵tudents to share their own experiences and to鈥痑pply what they have learned.
Discussion forums鈥痑re just as important as any other assignment.
Make sure your discussion questions are open-ended鈥痑nd focus on provoking critical thinking and鈥痵haring of the students鈥 own experiences. Students鈥痩earn a lot from each other, and forums give them鈥痑 chance to do just that.
There are some faculty鈥痑nd teachers who may say that not every subject鈥痩ends itself to discussion forums. I believe鈥痶hat is not true.
Even math makes for a good鈥痙iscussion 鈥 try asking students how to鈥痑pply a particular concept to real life or have them develop their own word problems and鈥痩et others solve those word problems.
Third tip,鈥痶he most important skill for a professor is to鈥痥now how to promote student-to-student interaction鈥痑nd how to provoke critical thinking.
So, in your鈥痙iscussion forums, try asking additional questions.鈥疐or example, John thinks XYZ, what would happen if鈥疉BC happened instead? Or if John is correct, what鈥痑bout Carrie鈥檚 suggestion?
Try making connections鈥痓etween students鈥 posts which get them thinking鈥痑nd responding to each other.
The fourth thing:鈥痬ake sure you organise the discussion forums and鈥痶each students how discussion threads work.
For example, level one鈥痠s always the first response level. Level two is鈥痶he students responding to each other and so on.鈥
鈥疦umber five: one of the most important key鈥痶akeaways from this video is: how much should鈥痑n instructor engage in the discussion? This is鈥痶he science behind discussion forums. Jumping in鈥痮n every student post is not the answer.
Yes, it鈥檚 nice to be recognised by the instructor but your job is to engage students with each other鈥痑nd share their experiences.
This is also the鈥痯lace where you can share your knowledge about鈥痶he topic, but you should never comment without鈥痑sking a follow-up question. Also, never give the鈥痑nswer or even allude to this is how it works 鈥 this is a discussion buster.
On the other hand,鈥痭ot enough engagement in the discussion and鈥痺ith the students, they may not be able to keep鈥痶he discussion going, and that is your job.
Lastly,鈥痭ever tell the students how many words they should鈥痯ost, or how many other students they should鈥痳espond to. Use a rubric, otherwise you will鈥痝et exactly what you asked for and no more.
Good luck on building your next discussion forums 鈥 and鈥痳emember discussion forums are an art and a science.
