Evangel University Akaeze is a Christian university in Nigeria鈥檚 Ebonyi State, and was established in 2012. It gained full accreditation from the National Universities Commission in 2016. Across its four colleges, Evangel provides higher education across the fields of art and science. Evangel University has four main colleges, including: science, health sciences, management sciences, and arts and social science. Across this range, students can choose to study a wide variety of degree programmes, including mass communication, economics, marketing, accounting, physiotherapy, and microbiology. The university鈥檚 Entrepreneurship Unit encourages students to develop their skills and confidence in innovation and idea creation. The team of life coaches, business mentors, entrepreneurs and lecturers follow a curriculum that fosters an entrepreneurial mindset, covering topics such as opportunity identification, business communication, digital opportunities, and business ethics. Like many Nigerian higher education institutions, students applying to study at Evangel University must sit the matriculation exam and obtain a minimum score of 140. The university鈥檚 campus is located in Nigeria鈥檚 Ebonyi State, nicknamed the 鈥楽alt of the Nation鈥. The primary language spoken is Igbo, however there are many dialects spoken and English is widely spoken at the university.

We are seeking a doctoral researcher to join the Micro and Quantum Systems (MQS) research group in the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University. MQS currently comprises more than 18 members and is expanding. We are advancing foundational topics in quantum computing and their practical applications. In this position, you will work at the intersection of quantum computing, computational biology, genomics, and materials science. You will have the opportunity to delve deeply into quantum computing and contribute to high-quality research with real-world impact. Join us in shaping the future! Your role and goals Your primary task as a doctoral researcher is to conduct research in quantum algorithms and quantum information, leading to the completion of your PhD. You are expected to take an active role in advancing the MQS group鈥檚 research projects. Our recent work has focused on the theory and applications of quantum walk algorithms, variational quantum algorithms and their optimization, adiabatic quantum computation, and quantum machine learning. Theoretical and applied research into the capabilities of quantum computing and quantum advantage is a prospective topic across four application domains: bioinformatics, breeding, biomaterial synthesis, and cellulose鈥憄rocessing enzyme design. You will develop hybrid quantum鈥慶lassical algorithms to tackle domain鈥憇pecific, computationally demanding problems. Methods will be designed for near鈥憈erm (NISQ鈥慹ra) deployment, with models evaluated for expressivity, training stability, scalability, and resource requirements on representative problem sizes, and systematically benchmarked against fully classical baselines. In parallel, medium鈥 to long鈥憈erm quantum algorithms will be explored to assess quantum readiness and to establish innovative methodologies relevant to each application field. The exact research topics can be tailored to your interests within the scope of our current projects. Your goal is to produce world鈥慶lass research results, in collaboration with other group members in the lively environment of the MQS group, and to publish them in high鈥慽mpact journals. In addition to research, you will be expected to take doctoral coursework and participate in the group鈥檚 teaching activities.
