Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences is possibly one of the oldest new universities in the world. Its origins can be traced back to 1757, when an academy of painting and sculpture was founded in the central Germany town of Mainz. Over the next 260 years, it reinvented itself repeatedly, merging, closing and reopening, until it became Hochschule Mainz in September 2014.听
Around 5,500 students now study at Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences, on 45 degree programmes taught by three departments: business, design and engineering. Around 3,000 of the university鈥檚 students study a business-related degree.听
A new campus was opened in 2009; a second construction phase 鈥 due to be completed in 2026 鈥 will bring together all the university departments on the single campus site. It includes the new LUX pavilion, which offers meeting rooms and workspace, as well as two floors for exhibitions, symposia and workshops.
Halls of residence for 500 students, as well as a daycare centre for the children of students and university employees, are in close proximity to the campus.听
Much of student life is concentrated in the area around the Rhine river. The city of Mainz hosts a number of festivals and open-air events, including a pre-Lenten carnival, featuring masked parades and political satire.听
