Your personal sphere of influence: The advertised position is located in the Department of Education in the section "Foundations of Education" of Univ. Prof. Dr. Daniel Tröhler. The Department's main responsibilities lie within the international area of teaching and research in the field of Education. The subject area of inquiry include the education and training processes in specially created social institutions (such as schools), as well as the educational and socialization processes in non-educational institutionalized fields of social life (peer groups, milieus, media, etc.). The Department of Education is part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The research area "Foundations of Education" aims at investigating, by means of an international approach, educational systems of thought that emerge in the respective historical, cultural and national contexts and often spread across their own national borders in the course of time. Against the background of international research access, the research area works with partner institutions primarily in Scandinavia, Great Britain, Western Europe, Canada, and the USA. Within the framework of this PraeDoc position, a dissertation is to be written on the basis of the Rudolf Ekstein estate, situated in the building of the Department of Educational Science, the precise content of which is still to be determined. The position is vacant for the period of absence of a member of staff, September 5th - December 26th, 2026. Duties and Responsibilities The appointee will support the research and implementation of a longitudinal study of early childhood development in Hong Kong as well as the preparation of research proposals under the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences. Additionally, the appointee will contribute to the preparation of research proposals and contribute to other research projects of the Social Sciences Research Centre (SSRC: https://www.socsc.hku.hk/ssrc/people/) in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Key responsibilities include: Collecting, cleaning, and analysing research data under supervision, ensuring accuracy, quality and integrity throughout the process. Preparing comprehensive technical reports detailing research methods, findings, and implications. Requirements Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or an equivalent qualification in sociology or a closely related social sciences discipline. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities: Excellent written and spoken proficiency in both English and Chinese. Strong quantitative research skills within sociology or social sciences, demonstrated through relevant experience or coursework. Proficiency in statistical software such as Stata, R, or other relevant tools to facilitate data analysis and interpretation. Experience or interest in conducting research on topics related to child and youth development, family studies, education, and physical and psychological health disparities. Experience in data collection projects is preferred.
