About Waynesburg University

Basic information and contact details for Waynesburg University

Waynesburg University is a private Christian institution near Pennsylvania鈥檚 south-westerly border with West Virginia. It is one of the best value liberal arts colleges in the region.

The university is named after soldier-turned-politician Anthony Wayne, who served as a brigadier in the American Revolutionary War and was later appointed general in chief of the US Army by President Washington. Its relatively small campus is also in the borough of Waynesburg, however. Established in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg was one of the first colleges in the country to become coeducational, though all of its 10 halls of residence are single-sex.

Forensic science, criminal justice, business, communication and nursing are Waynesburg鈥檚 most popular study programmes.

As well as its Waynesburg campus, 45 miles from Pittsburgh, the nearest major city, and the state鈥檚 second largest, the university also boasts adult centres of education in the nearby town of Canonsburg, Monroeville, just east of Pittsburgh, and Cranberry, which is in the north of the state.

Albert Baird Cummins, a former US senator and governor of Iowa who twice sought the Republican Party presidential nomination, and Edward Martin, a war veteran who was Pennsylvania senator and governor during the 1940s and 50s, are both Waynesburg alumni.
